More Ubuntu

It might have been the above average snow fall we were experiencing or perhaps I could blame it on the never ending political race for the White House that pushed me too far. In which case I should not be held blameless for my recent activities concerning Ubuntu. But the truth has more to do with the lure of open source software and the fact that I had good results on installing Ubuntu Studio on a desktop that caused me to install it along with Windows XP on an HP laptop. It was my first attempt at dual booting XP and Linux so it took a bit longer than it should of to get everything in order. After an hour or two I was ready and it booted into XP just fine but it would lock up going into Linux. After a quick search I found dozens of users having the same trouble with Ubuntu's Gusty kernel and HP laptops.

In the end I deleted the Linux partition and got on with my life and even though I am still interested in Linux, XP has just worked on everything I have installed it on. There are other flavors of Linux and maybe when I have more time I can try them out as well.

What would Jesus download?

While I was searching for Bible study software for Linux I came across this site. I did what anyone would do, I downloaded the .iso file for Ubuntu CE and took it for a spin. By the way CE stands for Christian Edition. It is an interesting idea and took a bit of work. It does have several Christian specific programs that could be useful, but while I liked the idea I would rather start with Ubuntu Studio and add study software as I went. It did open my eyes to the possibility of using a Linux OS for my main laptop.

I guess I will find out soon enough.

A New Year

Well it is a new year and all. I hope you all had a great Christmas and an awesome New Year. Something tells me the gyms are full of people and the bloggers are blogging again. I am anyway.

I snowed most of the day so there will be no school tomorrow! Work doesn't have snow days. :-(

So many choices

Multiples, it is the word for today. There are so many things to write about, Family (school is starting soon), Church (upcoming General Assembly and new regional web site), work (reduction in work force), and on and on. Speaking of school, even I will be attending two classes at the local university. Creative non-fiction sounds like it should be fun but I am not sure about math 143.
The last time I counted I had about ten e-mail addresses and multiple blogs that I have been away from. It gives me writer’s cramp just to think about it but what shall I write about?
Anyway take care my friends.

The Great Birthday Trip

It seems that we don't get away from town very often but last week we loaded up the car and made the long one hour trip to my mom's house to help her 7* birthday. We had a nice visit, went out for a meal, and ate some cake that John and Laura shipped all the way from Springfield, Oregon. Rather dramatic I know but I have posted for awhile so I wanted to make up for lost time. Anyway, for once I took a few pictures.

Of Plums and Prunes

Speaking of those who were professors of the Christian graces and yet not possessors of the same, one of my friend stated, "Don’t tell me you're an apple tree when you have prunes hanging on you." Another of my friends answered this statement with, "That's stupid, there's no such thing as a prune tree!" So thus began a long running feud between two of my two friends.

My part in this is simple; I wanted to know if there really was a prune tree so I went into discovery mode and attempted to do some research. I found if you go to your local store to pick up a few dried prunes they most likely came from plum trees as most dried prunes come from plums. Here is an interesting tidbit from ketchum.com, "In May 1999, the California Prune Board, with the industry's approval, requested permission from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to officially change its product's name to dried plums. We developed a creative campaign called "The Federal Witness Reidentification Program," which revealed the true identity of the prune as the dried plum. We conducted media outreach to consumer-and-trade radio, television, print and Internet sources announcing the "top secret news" that "a fruit had been discovered living under an assumed name: the dried plum -- formerly known as the prune." "The prune had been masquerading as a 'regular' old fruit."" It seems that most people view anything prune related as a relief for certain medical conditions, while plums you know are simply yummy. It is no wonder that my friend wrote the prune tree believer off as just another dried up thinker. But wait it is not all bad news; news flash, there really are prune trees and the main difference between the two is, the pit. Prunes have a cling pit while plums have a free pit.

The real moral of the story is this, we often make mountains out of mole hills or we major in minors. Experience tells me my friends wouldn't be that interested in the facts. One would say, "See there really are prune trees." The other would say, "Oh yeah, well dried prunes come from plumbs." Now, I know that this is humorous but when we major in minors we often have minors in majors. Let us rather be earnest in the things that are eternal.

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Long time no blog

Wow, I guess it has been awhile since my last post. We have been busy but for the past three weeks I have been at home and in the hospital recovering from another back surgery to fix the same problem. It has given me some quiet time and I have enjoyed that. So much of a person's identity is associated with their job, so it has been strange not going to work but soon life will be back to normal and I will miss this time.

I have been trying to do some research on the words throughly and thoroughly. Throughly is used in earlier printings of the KJV and thoroughly is used in many of the latter printings. Websters 1828 dictionary states that the two words have the same meaning but others disagree. I would like to here what you may have to say. Please leave a comment.

Well it is a beautiful day outside so I need to go outside and take advantage of that.

Time is like pie?

To my friends and all the others who may read this, I apologize to the two of you for not updating this blog. Time is like an apple pie and it does not matter if I slice it 24 ways or eat in one sitting, it is still only one pie. I have been busy with family, church, work, and whatever else I can squeeze into the day. Recently I attended an Intro to Writing class. I really enjoyed the class and I only hope that I can find some time this week to complete the final assignment. A few years ago I almost failed a class on maximizing your time because I didn’t find the time to attend class. It is my hope that history does not repeat itself.
Last week Mr. Howard and I hiked to the top of Shaw Mountain Outside Of Boise. I call him Mr. Howard because his first name is Kim and I didn’t want you think that something funny was going on. Oh, if only his wife’s name was Pat. The hike is a good eight mile round trip and 3000 feet to the top. I shouldn’t mention the woman we saw that were running to the top while I was staggering but I was certainly happy for them.
Cheers.
